HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF LANG DULAY

The Filipino who received the National Living Treasures Award is Lang Dulay. She was a traditional weaver from the Philippines. The artist was also awarded  by the National Commision for culture and arts (NCCA). During President Fidel Ramos' administration, Lang Dulay was named a national living treasure in 1998. She was the oldest dreamweaver in the land with more than 100 designs with her name.

Lang Dulay has its own school known as Manllikha ng bayan center for students as well as grandchildren who want to train for crafting. However, Roy emphasized that, despite the efforts to train weavers, Lang Dulay is still listed as a dreamweaver. This means that the "ordinary" weavers are only there to weave the T'nalak fabric, not to design it; she is the one who is credited with preserving tradition of weaving T’nalak, a dyed fabric made from abaca.
